Sigh…..I wanted so much to love this movie, and that isn’t to say it wasn’t good, but much like a second look while freshly sober, not quite what I had hoped for. Allow me to begin by saying, I read the book several months ago, and for anyone who has, you would have known going in, that there was no way in hell all of that was getting squeezed into a three hour film. So my criticism comes from a very realistic point of view, I assure you I am not being unfairly judgmental here.
My first issue was with the fact that if not for my knowing full and well that this was a Scorsese production, I would have never known. Nothing about the direction said Marty, anyone, as far as I am concerned could have directed that film. Mind you, I am not one of those people that assumes a film will be stellar, simply because Scorsese directed it. He is brilliant, but at times is…lets say, more brilliant than usual. While some showed a distaste for “Shutter Island” I personally loved it, in fact so much so, that it is one of my all-time favorite films.
First things first, the performances were great, Leo played the crap out of that role, as did Jonah Hill, whose performance I think came out of left field for many of us. While I was pleasantly surprised by the performances, and I realize important events had to be drastically edited. I was just dumbfounded by just how edited they were, one of the best scenes in the film (and I wont spoil it by saying which) was changed immensely. So I guess, in the end, it all comes down to how entertained you were by it, perhaps my having already delved into the life of Mr. Jordan Belfort somewhat desensitized me. I would like very much to assume it was for that very reason that it failed to wow me, because the performances were in fact very good.
